JCPenney

My first job. I had to get a job as soon as I turned 16 because my dad decided I could work for myself and he didn’t need to support me anymore :) I’m not gonna say I absolutely loved working here because I didn’t; but it definitely could have been worse.

I’m a hard worker. Even at one of the most basic jobs, I took pride in my work. By the end of my nearly 2 years here, I was one of the managers’ favorite employees and I was trusted to do pretty much any task in the store.

Here are some of the responsibilities I had here:

  • Maintain accurate and attractive merchandise displays, ensuring strategic placement of products in order to maximize sales

  • Establish a comfortable team environment by being an excellent crew leader, welcoming and training new staff, and working closely with managers to deliver outstanding results

  • Assist team members by operating POS systems, organizing inventory rooms, labeling products, unloading and restocking merchandise, and preventing theft in fitting rooms

  • Identify when stock is low and properly replenish merchandise racks and shelves

No one’s first job is their favorite job. I do feel lucky to have been able to work in such a comfortable environment. It could have been a hot, greasy fast food restaurant. I’m really proud of myself for taking on 25+ hours a week on top of going to high school and participating in extracurriculars.

Eventually, almost a year into college, my manager called me and wanted to talk about scheduling more hours; I told her I moved far away from that town and I’ll probably never come back. She said, “Ok, have a good life.”

I am having a good life :)
